Saddle Bar Stools

Saddle bar stools have a gentle slope in the middle of the seat which imitates a saddle. Most saddle stools are backless and lack upholstery, but there are also a few styles with padding.

Many backless saddle stools have a rectangular seat that’s about 11 inch deep by 18 inch wide. This is a unique yet comfortable design, which gives you an alternative to square and round seats. Saddle stools are usually wooden, or else they combine a steel frame with an upholstered seat.

When are saddle bar stools the best choice?

Saddle bar stools are a great choice if you have limited room in the kitchen, especially if there’s a narrow walkway behind or in front of the island. Stools with backs tend to stick out past the counter’s overhang. Saddle stools, however, can easily be tucked under a 12 inch to 16 inch overhang and won’t block the walkway.

Saddle stools are also ideal if you prefer to hide your seating and showcase your countertop. Their low profile allows the beauty of your granite, stone, or other material to be on display. They create a cleaner, less cluttered look – just remember that it’s generally easier to sit for a long time in a stool that has a back versus one that doesn’t.

If you want to display your countertop and still have stools with backs, we recommend stools with wood or metal open backs. It’s easy to see the countertop through these back designs.

Choose saddle bar stools for a tight spot.

If you have an L-shaped island, it’s common to have stools with backs on the long side of the island, and a saddle stool on the short end. The short end of the island is usually a tight spot where a stool with a back doesn’t fit well. The saddle stool will tuck under the counter when not in use and eliminate the crowding.

Other advantages of saddle bar stools:

Saddle stools are lightweight, durable, and easy to get in and out of. They’re often more comfortable than ordinary, flat wood seats because they’re shaped to the curve of your body.
